CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Carmen

“Good morning everyone!” I greeted, as I swung open the doors to the studio. Even though I didn’t have any human staff in yet this morning, I made it a point to do this with my paintings. I mean, they were all alone overnight, so I wanted to give them a little recognition.

But my smile disappeared when I saw what was waiting. My handbag slipped from my grasp and hit the floor as a wave of dizziness washed over me. The next thing I knew, I hit the ground on my knees, letting out a scream.

After that, it’s all a blur. Folks rushed in from neighboring stores, and shortly Brett and Derek were there.

They were all talking, but I couldn’t make heads or tails of what they were saying as I stared into space, completely shell-shocked. Where was I gonna start now? Three months of hard work, all gone to waste in one night. I didn’t even have any tears left in me to cry.

I lazily glanced around at the wrecked interior of my studio. I could see that they ruined every piece of art in my wrecked studio. They had thrown paint over some paintings, including the walls. Others appeared ripped by with some sharp object.

I knew I must be in shock, but I still had trouble breathing. What happened here? I was near to losing it, but somehow held on to my sanity, just barely.

I snapped back to reality when I noticed a figure standing in front of me, saying something I couldn’t quite catch. As I tuned back in, the noise of the crowd and the police officers investigation filled my ears. I tightened my fists, annoyed by the disturbance of my usually quiet sanctuary.

My studio was always a peaceful place, but now it felt like the complete opposite.

I wanted them all to leave, but I knew that would not happen soon. They were here to lend a hand. Here to help me. I let out a sigh of defeat, feeling my spirits sag even more.

“Carmen,” a familiar voice called. It was my brother Brett. He was watching me with concern and waiting for any sign of anger or fear. A sad chuckle slipped out of my lips. He knew me so well, and how I could get when I felt angry. I had no anger left in me though, only sadness and defeat.

“Are you okay?” he asked.

I raised my eyes to him. ‘Do I look okay to you?’ my expression said to him.

He paused and rephrased his questions. “I mean, were you hurt? Were you in here when this happened?”

I shook my head in reply. No, I wasn’t. But I wished I was. I wanted the vandalism done to ME rather than my beautiful studio. At least I could fight back. ‘You don’t mean that,’ a small voice said inside my head. I would have preferred it had never happened at all, but now that it had...where was I going to start?

“Don’t worry, we’ll sort this out, and find whoever did this,” Brett promised with great conviction.
